How to choose the right installation for a toilet plus a rating of the best models

A wall-hung toilet can be installed in almost any bathroom; it doesn’t even require a solid wall. Selecting an installation depending on technical conditions is not a problem; manufacturers take into account various nuances. Prices vary widely, and the popular belief that a wall-hung toilet is insanely expensive is a misconception. But so that the installation and use of such plumbing does not darken your life, it is worth understanding its structure.

Flush system

There are several types of installations, many more brands and models, but they all have a common unit - a flush system, consisting of a panel with a button, a drain device, a tank and trim.

The flush panel can be more than 10-20 cm in length and width. This is due to its dual functionality: in addition to controlling the drainage of water, it decorates the inspection window provided for repairing the tank fittings. Buttons are made of plastic, metal or glass.

Advice! The design of such a noticeable detail is important, so the choice often begins with it. If you leave this for later, you risk finding yourself in a situation where all the buttons compatible with the ordered installation will not fit into the interior. The products of the German company Tece are universal in this regard: its flush panels are suitable for any brand installations if the design matches. And the Geberit company, for example, has a clear distinction between series, only within which compatibility of buttons with modules is possible.

Drain devices are divided into mechanical, pneumatic and electronic. The mechanics work on the same principle as in a conventional toilet, opening the valve by the action of the pusher on the gear system. Due to their simplicity, such units are more reliable than others and cheaper.

The pneumatic flush is activated by compressed air expelled from a flexible reservoir under the button when it is pressed. The impulse is transmitted to the tank fittings through a flexible tube. The advantage is that such a panel can be placed at a distance of up to 2.5 meters from the toilet.

Electronic designs are equipped with an automatic drive. Flushing is triggered by an infrared sensor when a person leaves the restroom, or by touching the touch panel. Having a second option in your home toilet is desirable, because it is more convenient to use a brush during flushing or after. The disadvantage of this option is the high cost.

Viega touch-sensitive flush panel.

There are also economical systems - dual-mode and with a “flush-stop” option. The former allow you to choose between draining all the water from the tank or half (sometimes 2/3), the latter stop the process by pressing again at any stage.

Sometimes the opposite option to the previous ones is useful. Some models offer a continuous flush mode, when the water flow does not stop automatically; manual shutdown is required.

Concealed tanks are made of plastic. Their appearance is understandably not important. When choosing, you need to pay attention to which side the water supply is made. Budget models usually have only one option, while more expensive ones have several options. A good tank is insulated from condensation (this is important so that mold does not grow behind the lining during the cold season), as well as an inspection window that is spacious enough for inspection and repair.

There are models without a tank that flush with a flow coming directly from the pipeline, under the control of a control system. Their depth is less due to the absence of a tank, but the quality of flushing depends on the pressure in the water supply.

The piping includes an inlet and flush fitting. Everything is standard here, there is nothing special to choose, except for the absence or presence of a soundproofing panel on top of the inlet tube. The outlet is most often equipped with a 90/110 mm adapter.

Types of installations

Block (mounted) modules consist of an installation console on which the flush cistern and trim are supported. Such equipment is mounted only on a solid wall, hidden in a pre-hollowed or existing niche, and after installation can be walled up or covered with a panel. Constructions of this type are the best option when there is a reliable wall behind the toilet, but there is not enough free space in front.

Alca block module.

The installation for an attached toilet is even simpler: it is a hidden-mounted cistern equipped with brackets and inlet fittings. Installed in a niche, mounting is possible both on the front wall and on the back. Sometimes this type of module, the most inexpensive, is purchased to hang the toilet directly on a solid wall or concrete screed. Reliability and other aspects of such solutions depend on the skill of the performer.

This is what installing a wall-hung toilet on a screed looks like. As you can see, we are not talking about saving space.

Frame installations . The basis of the design is a rigid frame made of a thick steel profile, which takes on the weight of other elements and the person sitting on the toilet, while maintaining its shape.

Frame module design.

Such models are ahead of other types of installation systems for toilets in terms of average cost, which does not prevent them from being the most popular. The point is the following advantages:

  1. Frame structures are attached in combination to the wall and floor. The main load falls on the legs; only part of the force from the bending moment will be applied to the vertical fastening. This reduces the requirements for wall strength.
  2. You can install a frame installation in a plasterboard partition or even in the middle of the bathroom. For such purposes, models with a double frame are produced, attached only to the floor with four legs.
  3. There is no need to prepare a niche behind the toilet; the module is assembled near the wall. At the same time, the design takes up a little space from the room. But there is still space saving compared to installing a floor-standing toilet due to the fact that the tank here is thinner.

Frame models allow you to place plumbing fixtures in any part of the bathroom where water and sewer can actually be connected. If there is no space along the walls for arranging a toilet, a corner structure, for example, from the Eco Plus line from Viega, will help out. And when you need to hang several devices along one wall or partition, there are linear installations. Corresponding modules are also available for double-sided installation.

Corner installation

GroheRapid SL 38750001

Average cost - 12,000 rubles

Durable, universal installation from German manufacturers. The equipment is intended for public and domestic premises (wall-hung toilets). Can be connected to a bidet. Tank capacity - 9 l. Water can be supplied from the back and sides. There are buttons for three modes: full, economy, stop, soundproofing. The height of the toilet bowl is easily adjustable. The device is installed in the floor and main wall. Dimensions: depth - 300 millimeters, height - 1130 centimeters, width - 500 millimeters, warranty period - 5 years.

Pros:

  • Strength;
  • reasonable cost;
  • versatility of connection and flushing modes;
  • does not make noise;
  • you can connect multiple devices;
  • anti-corrosion coating;
  • Condensation does not accumulate.

Minuses:

  • No deficiencies identified.

Installation dimensions

The standard sizes of frame models are (on average):

  • width – 50 cm,
  • height – 112 cm plus 20 cm retractable supports,
  • depth – 15-30 cm.

Block structures are more compact:

  • width – 50 cm,
  • height – 78-100 cm,
  • depth – 10-15 cm.

The height of the module is often of concern to users when installed under a window. The problem can be solved; every serious manufacturer has a frame kit with a height of 82 cm - this minimum is enough to fit into the given space. Typically, such models provide a frontal and top (on the window sill) location of the flush panel, since in the first option the button will be behind the raised toilet lid, which is not convenient for everyone.

An example of the described installation, the flush button is visible on the window sill.

Depth is also not often a decisive factor, but in this case there is a solution: Tece offers the TECEbox module (8 cm), and Geberit produces the Duofix 111.796.00.1 kit (similar). The Roca and Viega brands have similar lots, but they are a couple of centimeters thicker.

Important! Compactness in some indicators is achieved by increasing others. The TECEboх installation has a width of 64.5 cm, otherwise, with a depth of 8 cm, the volume of the flush tank would have to be reduced. This is what Geberit did - the tank capacity of their ultra-thin module is only 6 liters.

If the standard frame does not fit in width, Geberit comes to the rescue again with a 41 cm model. If you need a narrower one, then you can choose the installation for the Wisa Exellent XS toilet at 38 cm, Ideal Standard at 35 or Migliore Quadra at 30. Please note that all they have an increase in depth.

Tips for choosing

A few tips from experienced buyers will help you make the right choice and not regret it after some time of use:

  • The first step is to familiarize yourself with the composition of the structure. Most often, models are mounted on the wall, but there are also those that are supported on the floor.
  • In order not to encounter installation difficulties in the future, you need to immediately take into account all the features in the communications supply.
  • Make sure whether it will be convenient to service the plumbing through a special working window.
  • Currently, contactless drain buttons have appeared, but the two-mode option is still considered the most reliable and functional.
  • In order to save money, it is better to choose a set at once than to buy each element separately.
  • Before purchasing, you should read customer reviews, as they will not be silent about difficulties and shortcomings, as the manufacturer does.

How to install

To install the installation yourself, you need to use the fasteners that are included in the package, or buy them yourself. It is recommended to take them with a reserve, since most often the problem arises of a shortage of bolts and fasteners. They must be durable and of high quality, since the installation is often subject to high loads.

Any installation model has fastenings that allow it to be positioned in horizontal and vertical planes. It is necessary to mark in advance for the intended installation and make holes. By using adjusting bolts and nuts, the installation body is installed and securely fixed.

The main thing in this matter is to correctly set the position in space using appropriate fasteners, which are responsible for horizontal or vertical orientation. To correctly align the body of the product, you need to use a building level. The horizontal part of the structure can be adjusted using the legs of the supporting frame. They involve fixation in a specific position at the required height. To adjust the body vertically, you need to adjust the anchor, and then tighten it securely.

When installing the structure, extreme precision and care should be taken to ensure reliable fixation and further safe use. The stability of the device during loads depends on high-quality installation.

Wall-hung toilets in the interior

There is an alternative to installing the bowl on a corner installation. Vitra produces a hanging model, adapted for placement in a corner, which is mounted on a wall frame.

Why are the prices so different?

Why are the numbers on the installation price tags so different? The dispersion is not only due to the unequal prestige of brands. The cost, among other things, is affected by the thickness of the walls of the tank and how high-quality the material is used. The characteristics of the frame are of great importance - strength, readiness for cladding, the ability to adjust the installation height of the toilet. The quality of the fittings contributes to the rise in price, and the contribution of options that facilitate installation and increase its accuracy is also significant. Advanced models are equipped with an air purification system.

It is easier to select an installation by defining priorities and sensibly assessing the need for certain advantages. For example, all modules can withstand a load of 400 kg, and some manufacturers claim increased frame strength. A margin is needed here, but it’s unlikely that an object weighing half a ton will land on your toilet seat. However, if a dilemma arises: to save on the toilet or on the installation, preference is given to what will remain on the other side of the false wall.

Choosing reliability and space saving

If the owners of country houses, without hesitation, have recently in most cases chosen wall-mounted plumbing fixtures, then residents of apartments with standard small separate bathrooms hesitate that the installation will eat up this already small space. But in fact it turns out that the installation even saves space!

An installation with a wall-hung toilet takes up no more space than a floor-standing toilet, and in some cases even less (due to the installation of the mounting element in the plumbing shaft).

CarambolaFORUMHOUSE member

We have had the installation installed in our apartment for eight years and it has never broken down. At first it was a pity to spend money on installation. But the situation was hopeless: if you put the pipes in a box and did not install the system, then your knees would go into the corridor. Over time, I appreciated all the advantages, and now I don’t even consider a floor-standing toilet.

The point is also that in ordinary city apartments behind the toilet there is a deep shaft with sewerage and water supply pipes. Standard installations with fastening elements 20 centimeters long are not suitable here. A regular frame has two holes for attaching to the back wall, and it turns out that the mounting pins rest directly on the pipe. We have to urgently “collective farm” something: bend studs, invent some of our own designs.

Sergey Kozhevnikov

For the Russian market, our company has developed a simple solution: the studs are extended to 50 cm. This distance is enough for the deepest shaft; and the special top bar has two installation heights and longitudinal grooves for fastening studs in different positions. This allows you to secure the studs where the pipes are not in the way.

Large people with a lot of weight often refuse installations: they are simply not sure that the wall-hung toilet will even withstand them.

TytmosFORUMHOUSE Member

I hope big people won’t come to visit you! The installation holds up to 110 kg, but I hold 125 kg and gave up on this idea

From the point of view of our expert, these are completely groundless fears (but only when you are dealing with good, high-quality installations).

Sergey Kozhevnikov

Our built-in systems and any wall-hung toilet manufactured in Europe are guaranteed to withstand a static load of 400 kg.
