Hydromassage bath (jacuzzi) - types, device, how to install

  • 2 Operating hot tubs
  • A hydromassage bath is a device designed to create a jet of air and water. Hydromassage is the process of influencing the human body with water jets that are directed onto the skin with a mass of up to five kilograms and under pressure of up to two atmospheres. Hydromassage baths differ from regular baths in the system of pumping water using nozzles located in its walls. They create water jets by mixing water with air bubbles. Thus, a whirlpool is formed, which allows you to massage the body immersed in water.

    Operating principle and possible designs of a hot tub

    Before installing a bathtub, study the design of the equipment.
    If you are still considering the purchase of a jacuzzi, then to make the right choice you should study its characteristics and possible designs of devices, which directly affect the quality of water procedures.

    Before installing a hot tub, you need to know how this device works. A Jacuzzi consists of jets, a water pump and a water intake mechanism.

    Principle of operation:

    • First, water is pumped through special holes for water intake using a pump;

    Important! The water intake for the massage system is not from the water supply, but from the bath itself, so before turning on the massage it is necessary to fill the bath. Ignoring this rule may result in system failure.

    • Then the pumped water is supplied under pressure through hoses to the hydromassage nozzles;
    • The cycle repeats.

    Thanks to the special design of the nozzles, the supplied water can be mixed with air. Please note that the injectors have different designs. Therefore, the type of massage, for example, back or lower back, will depend on the choice of function.

    There are also Jacuzzis that have or can install an air massage in the bathtub. This massage process is carried out using special nozzles located at the bottom of the bath and an air compressor. Compared to conventional hot tubs, these have a turbo mode, which provides increased water flow by pumping in more air.

    An example of how an air massage works.
    The most expensive models come with additional bells and whistles, namely:

    • ozone therapy – the healing effect of water enriched with ozone;
    • chromotherapy - medical procedures that are carried out using rays of light;
    • aromatherapy - the beneficial effects of all kinds of smells.

    These and other functions are controlled using taps, buttons or controls. Since the entire adjustment procedure is carried out by pneumatics, electrical damage cannot occur in principle.

    Hydromassage box with bathtub. Advantages and rules of choice

    Another feature of hydromassage baths is the installation of plumbing fixtures (mixer, shower head, etc.) directly on board the product.

    The design of the drain and overflow mechanism also has its own characteristics:

    • Firstly, the draining process itself is carried out in semi-automatic mode.
    • Secondly, in place of the overflow hole there is a handle with which the water is drained.

    Important! To drain the water, just turn the handle and the drain hole will open.

    • Thirdly, to avoid splashing of excessive amounts of water, there is an overflow hole under the handle.

    It should also be noted that before installing a hot tub, you should pay attention to models equipped with a drainage option. Such Jacuzzis provide constant circulation of water in the bowl of the device.

    Requirements for the installation site of the jacuzzi

    It should be understood that a hot tub cannot be installed everywhere and not always - due to its size, weight and device features, installation is associated with some difficulties and limitations. And it is advisable to familiarize yourself with them before purchasing a Jacuzzi.

    Choosing a location for a jacuzzi

    Firstly, it is advisable to coordinate the installation of such plumbing with the organization responsible for the condition of the apartment building in which you live. Otherwise, there is a high probability of conflict with representatives of the management company or with neighbors, who may legally require you to dismantle the jacuzzi if its installation violates building codes. In addition, the installation of a jacuzzi must be coordinated in the case when it is associated with the remodeling of the bathroom. Before installing a Jacuzzi, you need to pay attention to the pipes; you may need to replace the plastic pipes in the bathroom.

    Secondly, the floors in the room where the jacuzzi will be installed must be strong enough to withstand heavy plumbing. On average, for every square meter of a hot tub filled with water, there are 200-250 kg.

    Important! Also, the floor under the jacuzzi and the walls nearby must have reliable vapor and waterproofing - so that when using the product, moisture does not reach the neighbors and does not flood the floor below.

    Installing a Jacuzzi Bowl

    Thirdly, the room for installing a jacuzzi must have suitable dimensions. There should be up to half a meter of free space from the outer edge (or edges) of the hot tub, which may be needed in the future for moving plumbing fixtures, repairing them, and maintaining the utilities to which it is connected.

    Fourthly, the doorway to the bathroom should be large enough so that a Jacuzzi can be brought in without any problems. If it is too narrow, you will either have to abandon the idea of installing a hot tub, or dismantle part of the wall.

    Bathroom with jacuzzi

    And last but not least, the requirement that the housing where the Jacuzzi is planned to be installed must meet is a stable electrical network that can withstand the connection of such a product and ensure its operation without any incidents or problems. The combined power of a hot tub pump and compressor is enormous, and the wiring must be matched.

    Important! The Jacuzzi should be connected to electricity separately from the rest of the wiring - through its own outlet (protected from moisture) and its own RCD directly to the panel.

    Other requirements for a hot tub can be found in the instructions included with the specific model. When visiting a plumbing store, be sure to read this document before making a purchase.

    Jacuzzis are different

    In the world of plumbing, hydromassage baths come in all their variety.

    Which modification of the bathtub to choose is dictated by both the shape and dimensions of the room in which it will be installed. It is better not to install bathtubs with hydromassage instead of a regular bathtub; its use in an apartment building is not recommended.

    Since installation work will entail certain difficulties:

    • 1. To install a bathtub equipped with a hydromassage, you must obtain permission from the housing and communal services department. Technicians will inspect the building and evaluate the floor load that the room can withstand. A small hot tub filled with water weighs about a thousand kilograms, which can cause the floor to collapse.
    • 2. The small size of the bathrooms in the apartment may require combining the toilet with the bathroom, which is often done only with the permission of the housing and communal services authorities.
    • 3. The nozzles installed on the bathtub are susceptible to an excess of iron in the water, which entails the supply of water supply structures with filters.
    • 4. It is not allowed to use gels, shampoos and other foam-forming products in the jacuzzi. Detergents clog drains, so standard bathing requires an old-style bathtub.
    • The Jacuzzi is suitable for installation in a private home. For a bathroom, a covered room in the house or an outdoor veranda is suitable. Installing an outdoor Jacuzzi requires choosing the right model.

    Attention! Before installing the jacuzzi, they make a detailed plan of the room where it will be installed. The plan indicates the parameters of the room, and marks the outlets for electricity and water supply.

    The choice of plumbing fixtures depends on the data obtained.

    Jacuzzis are distinguished by a variety of surface coatings:

    • 1.baths made of cast iron.
    • 2.baths made of acrylic.
    • 3.baths made of steel.
    • 4.baths made of stone.

    Steel and acrylic bowls are lighter and can be installed in apartment bathrooms. If the floor can support a structure weighing more than a ton, then the installation of cast iron and stone models is allowed. Jacuzzis made of stone and enamel materials are resistant to chemicals, withstand heavy loads, and retain their original appearance regardless of weight.

    Hot tubs operate without loud noise and keep the water warm for a long time.

    In everyday life, bathtubs made of acrylic material are common, the composition of which is durable and light at the same time; models have different color variations and differ in shape. Scratches that occur during use of the bathtub can be polished out.

    Bowl shape

    Jacuzzis come in a variety of shapes. They are:

    • -round shape
    • -oval shape
    • - rectangular shape
    • -square shape
    • -in the shape of an angle
    • -non-standard shape

    In a room with small dimensions, rectangular or corner bathtubs are recommended. Models in the form of a circle or oval are usually installed in the center of the room. They require a lot of space.

    Square-type models or non-standard bathtubs are mounted under the walls.

    Appearance and material

    Typically, jets in a Jacuzzi are made of plastic, chrome-plated or brass. A cheaper option is made of plastic.

    The bathtubs themselves are often made of acrylic, but both cast iron and steel models can be equipped with hydromassage. Acrylic is preferred because it is warmer, has good sound insulation, and is not slippery. Another option is combined plumbing plastic.

    According to their shape, Jacuzzis are divided into:

    • round,
    • rectangular,
    • square,
    • triangular,
    • in the form of an ellipse.

    It all depends on the dimensions of the bathroom and the wishes of the owners. The hydromassage bath can be installed on a podium or built into the floor. For a small bathroom, a corner model is suitable, which will allow you to sit comfortably. Although the standard preference is given to rectangular Jacuzzis - they are easy to fit into the room.

    To make the bathtub stable, an all-metal frame with a large number of support points is used. Rectangular structures have six, corner structures have at least eight.

    If there is no podium, you will have to cover the entire pipe system with a decorative screen, or cover it with tiles or mosaics.

    Required Tools

    First we need to decide on the tools that we will need when installing the structure:

    • building level - to set an even horizon for the sides of the font;
    • hammer drill - for drilling holes in the wall in order to secure the font on additional supports;
    • a set of keys - for assembling the frame and adjusting the legs;
    • tape measure - for measurements;
    • screwdriver - for assembling frame elements and attaching them to the bowl;
    • side cutters - for electrical installation;
    • multimeter - for checking electrical circuits;
    • construction marker - for marking.

    How the device works

    Before carrying out installation work, the owner needs to understand how the hot tub works. The design of the equipment includes an electric pump and compressor; the injected water is saturated with air. To supply liquid, nozzles are installed in the walls of the container (the injection intensity is regulated by the controller). There are baths with simultaneous adjustment of the performance of nozzles or with the division of sprayers into working areas.

    The type of massage depends on the configuration of the nozzles. The parts are located in the lumbar area, on the sides of the tank and along the back of a lying person. Hydraulic elements are connected using flexible hoses designed for high water pressure. The scheme provides for a standard sewer drain.

    Auxiliary components include:

    • a drainage system that maintains continuous circulation of fluid;
    • connectors for connecting an external multimedia player (audio or video);
    • built-in units for saturating water with aromatic substances or ozone.

    Some Jacuzzi models are equipped with additional sets of water intake nozzles. Sprayers can use the stock pump, but may require a higher pressure or higher capacity pump.

    The effectiveness of massage procedures depends on the location of the nozzles and the pressure in the water supply system, so during installation it is necessary to take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations for connecting the jacuzzi.

    What do you need to know before installation?

    We have selected the tools, now we need to focus on some nuances.

    The first step is to take care of the convenient location of the font. After all, the tubes and nozzles will have to be washed quite often, and the pump and air compressor will need to be maintained. You need quick and easy access to all system nodes.

    Under no circumstances should you make a screen for a Jacuzzi from tiles and embed the font into the wall.
    Since in this case access to communications will be significantly complicated. It is better to use a removable front panel. about how to install a front screen in our special article.
    Until the installation work is completed, do not tear off the protective film from the surface of the bowl. Especially if you are installing the bathtub not in a tiled bathroom, but against bare walls, and plan to finish it after installing the bathtub.

    It is very important to provide for all electrical communications in advance. For the Jacuzzi it is necessary to make a separate outlet, and there should be 3 contacts: phase, zero and ground. It is also worth taking into account the power consumption of the hydraulic system - these parameters are indicated in the technical documentation and are measured in kW.

    For standard hot tubs, the power usually does not exceed 3-4 kW. Therefore, a 3-core cable with a cross-section of 1.5 square meters is suitable. mm. If the power is higher, you will have to take a cable from 2 kW. mm and thicker. We will talk more about connecting to the power grid below in the corresponding section.

    Unfortunately, the water in our homes is far from ideal, and the nozzles and pipe system are very sensitive to impurities in it.

    Therefore, in addition to the standard filters of the hot tub, it is necessary to install additional coarse and fine filters on the pipeline suitable for it. This will protect the system from frequent blockages.

    It is very important to take into account all the nuances described above before starting the installation process. Otherwise, there is a high probability that everything will have to be redone.

    Instructions for inclusion and operation

    After installation work is completed, the container is filled with water to check the tightness. Then the pump is started, after a test run the equipment is turned off and the liquid is drained. If no problems are found, then the supports are attached to the concrete base. The gaps between the acrylic bowl and the walls are sealed with silicone waterproof sealant. Decorative screens with viewing windows are installed on the frame. An overview of the equipment commissioning activities is presented in a video filmed by the installation crews.

    During further operation, it should be taken into account that the nozzles are started after filling the tank with water. Operation of the pump and nozzles without liquid is not allowed. After turning on the pump, it is necessary to adjust the flow intensity; aromatic substances are introduced into additional containers. Equipment manufacturers allow the use of water heated to +50 °C.

    To clean acrylic containers, special substances and soft sponges are used. The use of abrasive materials or chemicals is prohibited. To flush the internal channels of the nozzles, it is allowed to use an aqueous solution of acetic acid. Disinfection is carried out by pumping a mixture of water and a special substance with antibacterial additives.

    Installation of a hot tub

    Jacuzzi drain/overflow system assembly diagram

    1. Jacuzzis are designed for a pressure in the water supply system of 4/5 atmospheres. Typically, in our networks these values are not exceeded. But, it’s better to play it safe and protect your expensive device from surprises. Therefore, first install a pressure reducer on the bathroom.
    2. It is also necessary to install filters for water purification. The water in our water supply systems is not particularly clean; it contains many different impurities. Jacuzzi jets are sensitive to water quality; if you do not equip your bathtub with multi-stage filtration, they will quickly become clogged.
    3. When installing a whirlpool bath, it is advisable that when installing pipes in the bathroom, the water pipes should be located close to the water-consuming devices. Please also take into account the fact that access to the area where the Jacuzzi and pipes are connected is easy, this will significantly simplify the work if there is a need to disconnect the bathtub, if the question arises of how to make repairs in the bathroom.
    4. Next, the bowl needs to be placed on its legs where you have determined a place for it. Using the adjusting bolts, set the height of the Jacuzzi exactly according to the level. It should be noted that sometimes the bathroom is mounted on a special mounting frame.
    5. The Jacuzzi drain must be slightly higher than the sewer pipe. When you install a hot tub with your own hands, this parameter must be at least 10 cm. Basically, the installation of a drain system for a Jacuzzi is the same as for ordinary analogues.
    6. Such baths are also connected to the water supply according to the usual scheme. Do not forget, at the same time, to seal all joints, and also seal them, as necessary, with gaskets.

    Nuances of installing a hot tub ↑

    A hot tub is heavier than a regular one not only because of its large size: the weight increases due to additional equipment (pump, nozzles, piping system, etc.). Therefore, horizontal and height adjustment using screw feet is not applicable. The Jacuzzi is installed on a special frame made of pipes.

    A frame made of metal pipes is used to install the jacuzzi

    This requires a special approach to preparing the floor: it is carefully leveled using a screed and a self-leveling mixture.

    For the operation of this plumbing fixture, it is necessary to connect to three communications: water supply, sewerage and electricity. The water pressure in pipes and service equipment should not exceed 5 atmospheres. To protect the system, a pressure reducer should be installed, since during periodic tests the water pressure can be twice the rated pressure. Protection against voltage surges should also be provided: at the entrance to the house (after the meter), you need to install a cut-off relay or a stabilizer of the required power. The requirements for installing a drainage system are the same as those that must be observed in the case of a regular bathroom: the drain hole is located above the system bed, and the connection is made with a rigid pipe.

    The connection between the Jacuzzi siphon and the sewer must be accessible for maintenance: the pipes periodically become clogged and need to be cleaned. The same requirements apply to the connection point between the bathtub equipment and the water supply pipe: if necessary, dismantling must be carried out without difficulty. To prevent the injector holes from becoming “clogged” with deposits of metal salts and other impurities, it is necessary to install coarse and fine filters.

    The hydromassage effect is achieved using jets of water supplied under pressure through nozzles

    Installing a Jacuzzi - Necessary Tools and Preparation

    In order to install a hot tub, you will need a number of tools:

    • tape measure and angle for measurements;
    • level to control the position of the bath during installation;
    • marker or pencil for marking;
    • construction knife with a retractable blade;
    • a screwdriver with an indicator or a tester for electrical work;
    • pliers;
    • screwdriver;
    • gun for applying glue or sealant;
    • adjustable plumbing wrench.

    Tools and consumables for DIY installation of a jacuzzi

    As you can see, most of the tools needed to install a hot tub can be found at home, at your neighbors, or at your local hardware store. But before starting installation work, it is necessary to prepare the room where the plumbing will be installed.

    Step 1: Review the requirements for installing a hot tub. To do this, refer to the previous section of the article and to the instructions for the specific model of hot tub that you plan to purchase.

    Step 2. Take measurements of the room, determine the place where the jacuzzi will be installed.

    Before purchasing and installing a Jacuzzi, be sure to familiarize yourself with its dimensions and compare them with the area of the room where the bath will be installed

    Step 3. At the entrance to the bathroom, install a high threshold - it will not allow water from the room to penetrate into the rest of the apartment in the event of a flood caused by a defect in the jacuzzi or installation errors.

    High threshold to the bathroom

    Step 4: Move the heated towel rail away from the area where the Jacuzzi will be installed.

    Step 5. Move all electrical appliances and outlets away from the installation site of the hot tub. There should be at least 50-60 cm from the jacuzzi to such devices. This recommendation is dictated by electrical safety considerations.

    Using this diagram as an example, you can see restrictions on the installation of sockets and electrical appliances near the bathroom or jacuzzi. In zones 0 and 1, their installation is prohibited under any circumstances. In area 2 it is undesirable. Zone 3 allows the installation of sockets, but only with protection against moisture ingress

    Step 6. If the Jacuzzi will be installed on a podium, then prepare it in advance.

    Step 7. Run the water supply closer to the place where the jacuzzi will be installed. Also, do not forget to install shut-off valves so that there is no need to completely turn off the hot/cold water supply in the apartment when repairing or maintaining the hot tub.

    Step 8. Install fine and coarse filters on the pipes leading to the Jacuzzi installation site. Whirlpool bath nozzles break down very quickly when working with low-quality water, and their repair will cost much more than regularly replacing the cleaning elements in the filters.

    Sectional view of coarse filter

    Step 9. If the pressure in the water supply is not constant and may exceed the permissible values for a jacuzzi, install pressure reducers on the DHW and hot water supply lines.

    Step 10: Finish the walls, floor, and ceiling of the bathroom before you begin installing the Jacuzzi.

    The finishing of the walls, floor and ceiling in the bathroom must be completed in advance.

    Connecting to the hot tub water supply

    The technical parameters of the bath are designed for its operation in a water supply system with a pressure of 4-5 atm. However, for greater reliability, it is recommended to additionally install a pressure reducer.

    Jacuzzi nozzles are very sensitive to the quality of incoming water, so a prerequisite for connection is the installation of coarse and fine filters. This will protect the expensive system from breakdown. After all, it is rare that a citizen of our country can boast of the quality of tap water.

    It is better to place the pipes as close as possible to water consuming devices. In this case, it should be taken into account that they do not block access to the pipe and bathtub connections. This is very important if it is necessary to carry out an inspection or repair.

    The drain of the hot tub is located above the sewer drain hole at a distance of approximately 10 cm.

    Installing a mixer and connecting to the water supply for a jacuzzi is no different from their installation and connection for conventional baths. The only difference is that the mixers for hydromassage baths are installed directly on the baths themselves, and not on the walls, like with simple ones. The drain-overflow system on such bathtubs is usually made semi-automatic: the drain valve is opened using a handle located on the overflow hole.

    When the water reaches a critical level, it begins to overflow through the drain hole, which is located below the handle. The connection itself is made using a flexible water supply. The length is taken taking into account the possible movement of the bath relative to the wall at a distance of at least half a meter.

    Faucets with a 1/2″ diameter thread are installed at the outlet of the water supply pipes. When carrying out work, it is important to monitor the tightness of the connections, using gaskets if necessary.

    Jacuzzi installation

    Let's look at all the stages of the process using the example of installing a hot tub manufactured by KOHLER. Installation of a jacuzzi is divided into a number of sequential operations, presented in the form of step-by-step instructions.

    Step 1. Deliver the Jacuzzi from the store or warehouse to your home and move it to the room where you plan to install it. When moving the product, lift it not by the pipes or pump, but by the housing itself.

    The product was delivered to the bathroom

    Step 2. Study the instructions included with the plumbing fixtures. Check the completeness of the device - whether all the elements of the jacuzzi are in place, whether there are any broken or defective parts among them.

    Step 3: Install the hot tub headrest, if one is included with the product. In this case, it is available and is secured with a rubber gasket and plastic nuts. When tightening them, be careful - excessive force can lead to thread breakage.

    Step 4. Adjust the legs of the hot tub in advance to ensure that the fixtures are perfectly level on the floor. Use a level to control.

    Adjusting the legs

    Using a building level

    Step 5. Prepare the wall and floor for installing the bathtub - clean them of dust or dirt. Then install wooden slats with plastic pads - they will dampen possible vibrations that occur during operation of the jacuzzi. Then attach soundproofing panels to the floor and wall where the bathtub is installed.

    Step 6. Cover the edges of the jacuzzi that will touch the walls with insulating tape so that when taking a bath, water does not get on the walls and floor under the plumbing.

    Insulation tape

    The edges of the jacuzzi that will touch the walls are taped with insulating tape.

    Step 7. Move the Jacuzzi to the installation site, check again with a level how level the plumbing is. Adjust the bathtub feet if necessary.

    Now the Jacuzzi needs to be moved to the installation site

    Jacuzzi in place

    Step 8. Finally secure the bathtub to the wall using metal brackets and screws.

    Final fixation

    Step 9. Remove the part of the waterproofing tape that covers the edge of the jacuzzi - this will not reduce the protection of the walls and floor from moisture, but will improve the appearance of the bathtub.

    Removing part of the waterproofing tape

    Important! Instead of such tape, it is permissible to use ordinary silicone sealant.

    Step 10. Connect the Jacuzzi pump to the control unit and the general power supply system of the bath. Then connect the hose from the hydromassage pipelines. When connecting them to each other, pay special attention to the tightness of the connections.

    Connection location

    Step 11. Install the electrical wiring to which the jacuzzi will subsequently be connected. It must be separate from the rest of the network in the apartment and directly connected to the panel, taking into account the RCD.

    Step 12. Install a European-style socket (with ground contact) with moisture protection in the room where the hot tub is installed.

    Important! All work related to electricity should only be carried out when the mains is disconnected. Don’t be lazy and check each wire using a tester or a screwdriver with an indicator - not only the correct installation depends on this, but also your personal safety!

    Step 13. Connect the hot tub to the cable that will then go to the outlet using a sealed connector that is protected from dust and moisture. At the same time, be extremely careful and do not confuse the phase, zero and ground contacts - in case of an error, the electronics of the whirlpool bath may become unusable.

    Step 14. Connect the hot tub drain to the sewer using flexible corrugated pipe. If necessary, treat the connection with sealant - future leaks are unacceptable.

    Step 15. If your Jacuzzi model has a mixer built into the bathtub, connect it to the water supply using flexible hoses. Please note that the latter must be long enough, with the expectation of moving the plumbing fixtures away from the wall by 40-50 cm for repairing the product or maintaining communications.

    Step 16. Check again all connections of the jacuzzi to communications - whether they are made correctly, and whether there are any defects or errors. If you find them, take appropriate measures immediately.

    Step 17: Test run the hot tub. Check for leaks in the sewer and water connections and that all functions of the hot tub are working as they should.

    Step 18. If everything is in order, install fasteners for decorative panels that will hide the “insides” of the hot tub from view. Then install the panels themselves.

    A hydromassage bathtub made from an ordinary one

    How to make a jacuzzi? There are several ways to turn the most ordinary bath into it.

    Special mat

    The simplest thing is to buy a special hydromassage mat and install it in a simple acrylic or any other bathtub. In addition to the mat itself, the package includes a circulation pump, a hose and a remote control (optional).

    Water under pressure created by the circulation pump comes out of special holes on the mat. This is how hydromassage works.

    The advantage of this solution is maximum ease of implementation and affordable price.

    Read more about all the nuances of using a rug with a jacuzzi effect, its pros and cons, as well as cost here .

    DIY air massage frame

    The second method will require a little “direct hands” and free time from you. There are many ways to implement an air massage frame, it all depends on what you have.

    The main elements of the system are:

    • a device that supplies air under pressure (you can use a regular compressor or an old Soviet vacuum cleaner that blows);
    • perforated frame made of tubes (you can solder it from polypropylene pipes, or even make it from an old Soviet folding bed);
    • hose (used to connect the compressor and frame; a simple drain hose from a washing machine will do).

    Before making the frame, you must measure the bottom of the bathtub so that the finished structure fits freely in your bathtub

    Let's move on directly to manufacturing.

    STEP 1. First you need to cut the pipes to size. If you use polypropylene pipes, everything is simple; you can do this with special pipe scissors. If you decide to use an old folding bed, you first need to free it from the tarpaulin. And then cut the aluminum tubes of its frame using a grinder or a hacksaw.

    The frame should resemble a rectangle. For greater effect, you can make transverse ribs (indicated in red in the picture.)

    STEP 2. The next step is to fasten the tubes together. Fittings for polypropylene pipes are perfect for this. Plastic pipes are easily soldered to them using a special soldering iron. But it’s better to wrap the ends of the aluminum ones with electrical tape and then attach them to the fittings using metal screws.

    It is important not to forget to leave a tee with a free end to connect the hose from the compressor.

    STEP 3. Now you need to drill holes through which air will flow. The more there are, the more the water will “bubble”.

    conclusions

    In the article, we examined in detail the general operating rules for hydromassage baths. If you follow them, the font will last for many years and will bring considerable benefits to your physical and emotional well-being. But you should understand that each manufacturer’s models have their own operating characteristics, so be sure to read the instructions that came with your bathtub.

    Making a Jacuzzi from a regular bathtub is quite simple. To do this, you need to prepare a number of tools and materials, as well as read the step-by-step instructions for assembling the system.

    Necessary equipment

    When equipping a bathtub with hydromassage equipment, you will need to use a compressor, pump, several nozzles and check valves. All consumables are purchased at building materials stores.

    As related materials for the upcoming work, you need to take metal and plastic tubes of different diameters, liquid nails, ceramic tiles and Portland cement.

    Assembly and installation

    The process of assembling a Jacuzzi begins with the installation of an air massager, which is installed in the bathtub and dismantled after the session. You can make the device according to the following instructions:

    1. Using plastic tubes, you should assemble a frame that will fit on the bottom of the bathtub and not dangle. To strengthen the structure, it is equipped with cross members.
    2. A tee is mounted in one tube.
    3. At a distance of 100 mm, 15 mm holes are made in each tube.
    4. A plastic hose is attached to the outlet of the tee.
    5. Finally, you need to connect the hose from the pipelines to the vacuum cleaner to force air flow.

    System options

    There are many options for hydromassage systems on the modern market. Depending on the configuration and materials of manufacture, they are divided into several types.

    Materials for making bowls

    The body of hydromassage baths can be made of acrylic, cast iron, plastic, natural stone or metal.

    Bowls made of polymer materials are famous for their low price and aesthetic appearance. Acrylic and plastic are pleasant to the touch, but short-lived, but relatively cheap.

    To increase the strength of the bowl, its walls and sides are poured in 2-3 layers, and to make the structure rigid, it is reinforced with a metal lattice or fiberglass

    Acrylic bathtubs are very convenient to transport, since the weight does not exceed 40 kg. One person can handle their installation and connection of the system.

    Recently, you can also find models made of quaril on sale. The modified polymer is based on acrylic and quartz sand. Quartz sand enclosed in acrylic capsules makes the material, although relatively light in weight, resistant to mechanical stress.

    Bathtubs made of steel and cast iron are no less in demand.

    Cast iron bowls are good because they are able to retain heat, maintaining the most comfortable temperature during water procedures

    The enamel coating that forms the top layer is vulnerable to mechanical damage and requires careful handling.

    Bathtubs with steel bowls are much cheaper than their cast iron counterparts. But they are inferior to them in terms of operational parameters: they do not retain heat for so long and create noise when filling the container.

    Regardless of the material used to make the bowls, modern hydromassage equipment is absolutely safe for human health. The main thing is to strictly follow the installation instructions.

    But even in the event of a malfunction, the system provides protective functions. For example, the equipment will not function if the bowl is empty.

    To minimize the risk of electric shock, many leading European manufacturers equip their equipment with automatic circuit breakers and RCDs - residual current devices.

    In the event of a malfunction of the electrical equipment, the supply circuit will automatically break, and as a result, the bath will be completely de-energized.

    Dimensions and shape of plumbing fixtures

    Baths can have different shapes, both externally and internally. Rectangular models fit perfectly into the bathrooms of apartment buildings with a standard layout.

    On sale, hydromassage bathtubs with a rectangular bowl are available in two versions: for sitting and lying positions

    Hydromassage baths with round bowls look very beautiful and original. But they are demanding of space and therefore are not acceptable in small spaces.

    Corner, round, oval and square models are designed for larger bathrooms as they take up more space.

    Corner models with a bowl perpendicular to the corner of the room are a win-win option for original interiors

    The most popular are corner models measuring 1.4 m and 1.8 m with a bowl depth of 0.6 m.

    As an alternative, you can purchase a hydromassage box. It is a hybrid between a bathtub and a shower stall. The box can have any shape: rectangular, round, trapezoidal.

    The choice is limited only by the buyer's preferences and bathroom configuration. But models measuring 0.9*0.9 m are considered the most convenient to use.

    The hydromassage box is often equipped with trays mounted on legs or crossbars with high sides and a removable screen

    The material for making the pallet can be ceramics, metal or polymer.

    Compared to bathtubs, hydromassage boxes have the advantage that in addition to the healing hydromassage of horizontal and vertical types, thanks to special nozzles and closed walls, the structures can create a “tropical shower” effect.

    And when the steam generator is running, shower cabins with a sauna create the effect of a Turkish bath or steam bath with elements of aromatherapy.

    Hydromassage shower boxes are specially created for those who cannot part with a comfortable bath, but at the same time are aware of the economic benefits of a shower.

    Additional system functions

    Each bathroom, depending on the chosen model, may include: permanently installed nozzles and a removable front panel. Dispensers and a disinfection system, lighting and music, shelves for detergents and even a telephone can also serve as auxiliary devices.

    All active elements of hydromassage equipment and supply lines are hidden behind protective screens, and only the hydraulic nozzles are visible on the surface of the bowl

    According to the type of device, hydromassage equipment for baths is divided into two types:

    • conventional hydromassage systems - in them massage is carried out using standard air-water flows;
    • combined hydro-air massage systems - the work is carried out by air-water and air-bubble flows.

    Hydromassage equipment of a combined type, using hydro- and air-massage nozzles, makes relaxing and health-improving water procedures more effective.

    In bathtubs equipped with an automatic adjustment system, it is convenient to create entire massage “plays”. For example, first the side nozzles are launched at low intensity, after a few seconds a soft aeromassage system is connected to them, which is replaced by a powerful stacatto, giving a turbo massage to the back, shoulders and feet.

    Systems are often additionally equipped with halogen lamps and LED backlighting. The presence of lighting can create a unique atmosphere in the bathroom, promoting maximum relaxation and effective treatment.

    Chromotherapy is implemented in some systems using built-in lighting.

    The effect of the procedure is achieved due to the beneficial effects of color with a certain wavelength on the body:

    • green – will relieve internal tension;
    • blue – calms;
    • yellow – uplifting;
    • red – fills with energy.

    Some models are equipped with an ozonation system. As you know, ozone is an effective replacement for chlorine. But the natural oxidizing agent does not have a harmful effect on the human body.

    On the contrary, it has a bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effect, stimulating healing and creating an analgesic effect.

    Even simple halogen lamps that color the water jets in different colors can add uniqueness to hydromassage procedures.

    Developers annually improve hydromassage systems, adding new functions to them. In the latest models, the number of massages can reach three or more dozen. For example, in the J. Sha Mi Jacuzzi brand there are about fifty of them.

    For ease of use of plumbing equipment, most models are equipped with side rails, armrests and headrests

    Among the latest technological innovations, the pipeless hydromassage system has gained wide popularity. It differs radically from the traditional version in that the installed nozzles are equipped with individual motors with a turbine.

    According to the developers, such a system is more hygienic, since it eliminates stagnation of water, and therefore does not require disinfection and makes it easier to care for the hot tub.

    Features of installing a jacuzzi outdoors

    Owners of private houses install hydromassage baths on the terrace or at some distance from the house. In certain countries, you must obtain a special permit for construction.

    When choosing an installation site, it is important to take into account not only the dimensions of the structure, but also the size of the area for entry and technical work. Also, the jacuzzi should be located no closer than 1.5 m from the house and the border of the site. Please note that the distance from overhead power lines should be at least 3 m, and from spa panels - at least 1.5 m.

    Preparing the site for installation

    A hot tub with water can weigh up to a ton, so it is important to build a solid foundation for its installation to avoid damage to the device during its operation.

    The minimum dimensions of the site for installing a jacuzzi on the street are 3x3 meters

    A monolithic concrete base is considered the most durable and reliable, therefore it is an ideal option for installing a hot tub. It is laid in a uniform layer from 7.62 to 10.16 cm. However, this solution will not allow the Jacuzzi to be transported to another location without obstacles.

    Prefabricated slabs are considered the best foundation option today. They simplify not only installation, but also dismantling of the structure. It is important to choose the optimal strength of the panels.

    If you want to install a hot tub on your deck, it is important to find out if the foundation can support the weight of the hot tub.

    Proper power supply

    The cable to the jacuzzi can be routed both above and below the ground. Its diameter depends on the distance between the disconnector and the Jacuzzi, as well as on the maximum current consumption. It is necessary to use copper wire with nylon insulation.

    Additionally, you should install a 240V and 50 A RCD or a 60 A circuit for models with a multistage pump. Obviously, the required voltage for a hot tub is greater than the standard 220V, so it is advisable to install a disconnector in the electrical control unit.

    It is also important to select one circuit for connection. Connecting other devices to it is excluded.

    Most models of outdoor Jacuzzis do not require a water supply - water is drawn from a hose and then heated in the bowl.

    Thorough preparation for use

    Before using the Jacuzzi you must:

    • turn off the electricity, make sure that the elements are installed and securely fastened;
    • open the air valves;
    • fill the bowl with water from a garden hose or using buckets;
    • connect electricity, start the heating function;
    • test all modes.

    After checking the operation of the hot tub, you can safely use it for its intended purpose.

    Jacuzzi - operating principle

    The hot tub was invented in America in the middle of the last century. It was created by immigrants of Italian origin, the Yakuzzi brothers (the word “jacuzzi” came from the incorrect pronunciation of this surname), who had previously been engaged in the manufacture of hydraulic pumps. In 1956, due to certain circumstances, one of the children in the family needed regular massages, and one of the brothers, Candido Yacuzzi, decided to combine this process with a bath. Then the invention went through many years of refinements and improvements - serial production of the Jacuzzi began in the late 60s of the last century.

    Installation of a hydromassage bath

    The principle of operation of a Jacuzzi is as follows: the bowl is filled with water through a mixer, then part of the liquid enters the pipelines of the hydromassage system through the intake hole. Afterwards, this water is discharged back into the bath, but under pressure, which is created by a pump powered by electricity. Thus, hydromassage is provided to a person sitting in a jacuzzi. In addition to this, aeromassage can occur in the bath - air is taken by a compressor and released through nozzles either separately or mixed with water. All these processes are controlled using electronics or a pneumatic system. Modern Jacuzzi models are equipped with many different additional functions designed to increase the comfort or health benefits of taking a hot tub. Such functions include radio and music player, TV, color lighting, water aromatization, chromotherapy and ozone therapy and much more.

    A bathtub with a jacuzzi is no longer a luxury item, but a thing that can improve your health and give you a good mood

    Important! It should be understood that a jacuzzi and a hot tub are the same product with the same principle of operation.

    As mentioned above, using a jacuzzi has many positive aspects, including:

    • improved blood circulation;
    • increased muscle tone;
    • improvement of the human musculoskeletal system;
    • improvement of skin condition;
    • prevention and treatment of osteochondrosis;
    • fight against extra pounds.

    In addition, a jacuzzi has a calming and relaxing effect, improving the overall well-being of the person who has been in it.

    A Jacuzzi also means calm, relaxation, detachment from the daily routine and painful worries

    Features of using a jacuzzi

    First, water is filled into the bowl, and only then it is started. It is important that all nozzles are located in the water, otherwise the pump may overheat, causing it to leak or fail. After startup, the intensity of the jet is usually adjusted and the nozzles of the nozzles are adjusted.

    If the jacuzzi is equipped with a backlight, it cannot be turned on unless the bath is filled with water, otherwise the lamp may overheat and the body may become deformed. Water acts as a lamp coolant

    When operating a Jacuzzi, it is allowed to use aromatic substances and essences that do not form foam. Permissible water temperature is up to +50 degrees.

    Functional

    There are several types of underwater massage:

    • Only water affects the body - hydromassage;
    • only air bubbles - aeromassage;
    • both water and air together – turbo massage.

    The buyer himself chooses the set of functions he needs. If you want to massage a specific area of the body, you need to choose a Jacuzzi with the largest set of nozzles in one place in the font. As an option - a cascade mixer on the side of the bath - if your neck hurts or gets tired.

    The injectors themselves vary in size:

    1. for the back, lower back, hips - larger;
    2. for the feet and neck - smaller.

    By design they are:

    • rotating,
    • vortex,
    • twisting,
    • microjet.

    To ensure a massage of the entire surface of the body, three nozzles on each side of the bath are enough. Different manufacturers have their own placement characteristics, but the principles correspond to the rules of acupressure.

    Some baths have an aromatherapy system - you can choose a pleasant scent and saturate the water with it. It’s convenient because you don’t have to use aromatic oils, which pollute the water and clog the nozzles. Modern Jacuzzis have an automatic filling and draining system - you just need to press a button.

    Exploitation

    Is it possible to wash in a hot tub? Yes. It is advisable to do this before hydromassage, then it will be much more effective. However, you should not use highly foaming products. It is strongly recommended to wash only when the hydromassage is turned off.

    Can I get an electric shock when using a hot tub? No, subject to safety regulations. It must be connected to a separate RCD (residual current device that controls current leakage). In case of any emergency, the RCD will turn off the system automatically.

    What types of hydromassage control systems are there? Pneumatic or electronic. The first is simpler and cheaper, the second is more expensive and more functional.

    History of creation, benefits and design of a jacuzzi

    A jacuzzi or, in other words, a hydromassage bathtub from a luxury item quickly turns into the category of ordinary and even necessary things . What kind of device is this and what is the difference between a Jacuzzi and an ordinary bathtub?

    Let's look at the details about the design, types, maintenance, benefits and contraindications of hydromassage baths.

    History of creation

    The Jacuzzi is named after its creator, the Italian inventor and entrepreneur Candido Jacuzzi. In 1903, the Jacuzzi family (seven brothers) emigrated from Italy to the USA, California. All brothers had a talent for mechanics and invention. In the USA, they managed to create, sell profitably and set up their own production of more than 200 developments in the field of aviation, innovative pneumatic and hydraulic devices.

    In 1943, the child of the youngest brother, Candido Jacuzzi, fell ill with rheumatoid arthritis. The one-and-a-half-year-old baby was prescribed therapeutic massage and water treatments at the clinic. The father decided to arrange treatment at home and developed a device using an aeration pump immersed in a bath of water. The invention produced a massage stream of water mixed with air bubbles . This device became the prototype of the Jacuzzi.

    Good to know When creating your own home SPA salon, you should not lose sight of the interests of the younger members of your family - children! Therefore, we recommend that you read the article about children’s exercise equipment for home. Then your children will grow up strong and healthy!

    And don’t forget about exercise equipment for adults either. For example, exercise bikes for weight loss, according to doctors, are very effective. Find out more here.

    Jacuzzis quickly became popular among people suffering from various diseases. Before the first industrial design presented by Jacuzzi Inc. in 1986, pump baths were sold in health equipment stores and pharmacies.

    How the hydromassage system works in modern baths

    Using a pump installed inside the housing, water is first pumped out through a special hole (water intake). After passing through a hose system, also located inside the body, water under pressure is supplied back into the Jacuzzi tank through hydromassage nozzles .

    The nozzles are designed in such a way that at the outlet the water is mixed with air bubbles and comes out in a concentrated stream under high pressure. The nozzles can be installed along the entire length of the bathtub, or can be located in certain areas that are most convenient for massaging the back, limbs or neck. The minimum number of nozzles is 4 , but the most modern models are created with several dozen.

    According to the method of jet formation, nozzles are divided into several types:

    • Rotary - water and air are supplied in a spiral.
    • Ball - directed, intense impact.
    • Mini-jets – designed for back hydromassage.
    • With a rotating mechanism - for massage at an angle.

    The air to water ratio is controlled by an aero compressor. The activity of the massage jets depends on its power and intensity of work: the more air bubbles enter the water, the higher the effect of the hydromassage. Using the regulators, you can change the volume and strength of air supply, pressure and intensity of water supply.

    Jacuzzi models have been developed in which you can change the direction of air flow and switch its supply from one nozzle to another, if there is a need for more intense hydromassage of certain parts of the body.

    Mixers, taps, and drains in most Jacuzzi models are mounted on the body. Also, the most common option for operating the drainage system and preventing water from overflowing over the top of the housing is the semi-automatic mode. A valve is installed in the overflow hole. If water reaches a certain level in the housing and begins to put pressure on the valve, it opens and allows water to flow into the drain hole.

    The benefits of hydromassage

    Compared to a regular bath or shower, a Jacuzzi is much more effective and provides comprehensive benefits:

    • Allows you to quickly relieve muscle spasms and tone your muscles.
    • Improves blood circulation and speeds up the process of cleansing the body of toxins.
    • Tones the skin and improves its general condition.
    • Relaxes the nervous system , relieves both physical and emotional fatigue.
    • Improves joint mobility and has an overall positive effect on the musculoskeletal system.
    • Reduces pain.

    The newest models are equipped with additional devices that expand the useful properties of the jacuzzi.

    Injectors

    What are they? For hydromassage, for aero- and turbo-massage (with a mixture of air and water). According to the method of jet formation, there are ball (powerful, directed impact) and rotary (the mixture is fed in a spiral). There is a separate type of mini-jet for the back.

    All nozzles can have a rotating mechanism, so it is most useful to massage the body at an angle. There are also models with closing valves, which greatly simplifies the maintenance of the hot tub. It is preferable if the nozzles do not protrude too much above the surface, in order to avoid discomfort when touching.

    How many nozzles of one type should there be? By the way, they are also called jets. Basic options include 4-6 jets. In advanced models their number can reach several dozen. But it must be remembered that the greater the number of nozzles, the weaker the pressure of the supplied jet will be. Plastic injectors are considered more reliable.

    On the picture:

    There are turbo and air massage systems with nozzles that can be built into the bathtub without extending pipes to them (each one sucks in water and throws it back out). The nozzles can be located on the bottom, side, feet and lower back.

    Step-by-step instruction

    Installation of equipment indoors consists of 3 stages:

    • fastening the container;
    • connecting water pipes and drainage;
    • switching to electrical wiring.

    Housing Installation

    The equipment is brought into the room in its original packaging, which is equipped with handles for transportation. It is strictly forbidden to lift the tank by the protruding pipes or nozzle bodies. Then the bathtub is placed in a corner of the room and unpacked; using a hydraulic or laser building level, the equipment is installed horizontally. To adjust the position, screw elements are provided in the supports; when installing the product on a tiled floor, it is recommended to place metal coins with a diameter of up to 100 mm under the legs.

    A steel frame is installed around the perimeter of the acrylic tank. The design allows you to use the equipment without the risk of deformation of the edges or walls. At the same time, the location of the drain window relative to the floor is taken into account; the resulting gap should include a drain siphon. All units and pipes must be in an area of unobstructed access for preventive repairs, maintenance and cleaning.

    Connection to communication networks

    The design of the jacuzzi is designed for pressure in the water supply network within 3-5 atmospheres (information is indicated in the instructions for connecting the equipment). If there is increased pressure in the pipes, it is necessary to install an automatic reducer. Water mains and additional components should not block access to valves or couplings on the body of the hydromassage unit. The pipes are connected to points located on the inside of the tank body.

    At the bottom of the container there is a hole with a diameter of 40-50 mm, which allows you to drain dirty water. The design of the equipment includes an overflow tube equipped with a manual valve. The sewer drain is connected to the pipes with a flexible hose or using plastic elements.

    Electrical connection

    For switching to the electrical network, a 3-core cable with the ability to ground the equipment is used. The wire cross-section corresponds to the power consumption; it is recommended to use copper cables with a core cross-section of 2.5 mm² or more. The bathtub is connected to an outlet located outside the bathroom, or to a wire brought into the room (the cable is laid at a small height from the floor or embedded in the wall). The design of the power system includes voltage stabilizers and protective elements that prevent electric shock.
